A mother's intuition is a strange thing. Trusting your instincts when every doctor and many friends/family members don't agree with your decisions is no simple task. The doctor required a 7 month weigh in to keep an eye on Emory's progress (or lack thereof) in the pudge department. As you well know, that didn't go so well.

We took him to a pediatric gastroenterologist that requested we take ridiculous measures in feeding Emory. After a week of misery, we abandoned ship and talked about our options. I told Phillip that I was completely uncomfortable with the directions we'd be given. He agreed. From that point forward, we fed Emory the way we thought was best. The only thing we didn't change was adding rice to EVERYTHING (as it will weigh down the bottle and food...gravity is our friend).

Emory has always been a long baby. Currently, he's measuring almost 29.5 inches (90th percentile) in length and his head circumference is in the 75th percentile. However, here's a rundown on Emory's progress in the weight gain department:
4 months - 14 lbs 11 oz (10th percentile)
6 months - 14 lbs 12 oz (<5th percentile)
7 months - 15 lbs 6 oz (<5th percentile)
8 months - 17 lbs 12 oz (5th percentile)
Now, if you factor those numbers in with his height (which has always been around the 95th percentile) he's not even registering on the charts. Until...

9 months - 21 lbs 0.25 oz (60th percentile)

Holy mackerel! I was beyond elated. We switched doctors, so the new pediatrician had an incredibly hard time believing he was ever teeny tiny. He looked at him, told me the good news, and said he's well on his way to becoming a little linebacker. Hallelujah! Thank you Jesus! (Not to the linebacker part, but the gaining part.)

I was so happy I probably could have cried. For the first time, I feel like I can breathe a little. I've been so scared that he'll get sick and lose too much weight. Now, he's as healthy as an ox! Our perfect, drooling, chubby, little ox!

Thanks to everyone for the prayers and support. You have no idea how much it means to us!

Emory's 9 Months Old!

Guess what? We got to spend Emory's 9 month day as a family because it was MLK Jr. Day! We had fun doing a whole lot of nothing. Since Phillip and I work at two different times, we aren't home (while Emory's up and going) as a family very often. We played and lounged. I have to say, we all seemed to be pretty content!

Emory is a huge fan of bare feet. He has mastered the art of kicking his little feet as fast as he can until he gets any and all shoes off.

We have to head to the doctor for a weight check, but judging by the tummy and the cheeks I'd say he's chunking up!

He works hard at this baby thing. No rest for the weary.

Drool, drool, and more drool. No teeth, but plenty of drool.

The head tilt kills me. He does it at the oddest times (especially when he's eating).

Ms. Miriam gave him a Chicco 4 in 1 Ride On Car when we were down for Christmas. Holy delight! He loves this thing. We put him on it and he doesn't stop bouncing and scooting all over the place until we pick him back up.

Be still, my heart.

He can seriously study some toys now. He will also get mad if the toy doesn't cooperate.

Lastly, he has started making this face to huff and puff really fast. Again, this is a favorite during mealtime.

Can I just say that this age is SO fun. We love it! It seems like every day there is something new that Emory is learning. We are currently working on a little sign language. Emory will hang onto the couch now and stand for a few minutes. He'll occasionally bring himself to standing without holding on if he's seated on my lap. He is pretty good about reading (aka: eating) books also. He loves his sweet potatoes and bananas (see previous post), but he's the best at smuggling peas post-dinner because they are usually plastered to his derriere.

We are so incredibly in love with this little guy! I don't think either of us ever realize how much of a blessing Emory would be to our lives. Ahhh, definitely our little piece of heaven!

Nighttime Fun with Daddy

Seldom does Phillip have the opportunity to be home for our bedtime routine, so we took advantage of this long weekend. Emory loves his daddy! Can't you tell? (I was sneaky and caught them playing after bath time instead of winding down.)

Over the last month, Emory has picked up this head tilt. It's pretty funny. He will switch from side to side for a few minutes and then decide he's bored.

Emory's Self-Imposed Sweet Potato Famine

SOS! Precious Em loves him some sweet taters! I like that they are very healthy AND he's more than willing to eat them. I'm one of those tricky moms. You know the types: we sneak in healthy stuff like avocados and spinach into the blend. He'll eat ANYTHING as long as it's mixed up with sweet potatoes (bananas are a close second).

Don't be deceived by that sweet little smile!

The problem with this is that we are trying to segway into real finger foods (green peas, beans, steamed carrots, bananas, eggs, toast, etc.). Emory will take any of the aforementioned foods...as long as they are pureed and come with a TON of whole wheat cereal or oatmeal mixed in (reflux solution).

We are having ZERO luck with this finger food deal. Everything has to be mixed with sweet potatoes in order to be acceptable to our dear son's palate. Sheesh! The Irish would slap him (although, I know some of them would have been happy to receive anything other than an Idaho spud ;-P). I keep plenty of sweet potatoes on hand, and spend quite a bit of time with our Baby Bullet blending them after they have baked. However, at some point I'd like to enjoy life outside of my kitchen!

Suggestions anyone? I need to get his little guy to eat, but it needs to be with his hands and SOMETHING other than sweet potatoes. Help help help!

New Year's Resolutions

I hate New Year's resolutions! Just thought I should lay that out there. With that being said, I decided that instead of slapping a bunch of rules up to taunt me for the next few months (until I ultimately give up), that I would make a list of goals to live by.

1. Become a better me! You see the picture above? It's me in my element. Crazy husband. Check. Precious baby. Check check. Sense of humor to boot. Check check check. Emory has changed our lives in so many wonderful ways. He was the catalyst to a better me. I simply do not have time to worry about a lot of the minor things I previously spent a whole lot of time hung up on. When something doesn't go the way I plan, I shrug, laugh, and try again next time.

Now, that's not to say that I don't have my days. I do! There are days that I literally almost lose it. I have put Emory in his crib (post-reflux issues), scrubbed a floor or couch or dog (whomever or whatever the subsequent victim may have been), all the while bawling my eyes out. It's exhausting. Phillip doesn't get home until 1:30 AM. I have no one to share the responsibility with. He works 10+ hour days, so he has enough to worry about. Instead of crying next time, I hope I can put Emory on the floor with me. Maybe give him his own scrubbing brush! :-)

Volunteer more for causes that are near to my heart.
Open my home to others. I already host Bible study once every other week, but I need to welcome friends into our home and not fret over whether the baby will puke on them or if the dogs are barking a little too much.
Read more. I love reading, but having Emory has taken this hobby to an all-time low.
Take time for me. Even if it's just a bubble bath at 1 AM, it's better than vacuuming until 2 AM. Or a quick pedicure can do wonders for the soul! Even a hot cup of tea or coffee is enough of a cause for pause.

2. Start and stick to a PCOS diet! No, I'm not starting a diet for weight. About six months ago, I had an appointment with my OBGYN. She asked about our plans for other children. I told her that prior to discovering my infertility issues, Phillip and I both wanted five kids. Granted, we realize that's a little crazy and in no way are we willing to go through what we had to go through to get Emory four more times! However, she stated that she wanted us to try for six months on our own and then come back to her to start treatments again if we weren't able to conceive.

My problem is that I don't want treatments again. I still have a strong (VERY strong) desire for many more children, but Phillip even said that it just isn't worth all of the sacrifice. We are so thankful for Emory, AND I WOULD GO THROUGH ALL OF THE HELL I LIVED THROUGH TEN MORE TIMES FOR HIM ALONE! However, we took a step back and evaluated the cost physically, emotionally, and mentally. It's incredibly taxing! I spent 2 years on hormones, fertility drugs, diabetic medication (they assist with PCOS), 9 months with hyperemesis, and 6 months (extremely pregnant) with gallstones that eventually impacted the function of my liver.

I have been trying to steal some extra time to research PCOS and my other condition, adenomyosis. While there isn't much I can do about the latter, I CAN make some changes and pray they suit my body well. PCOS diets range from rawism to vegan to Paleo. Now, with my gallbladder I could barely digest red meats. Since it's removal, I simply can't do much of anything in the way of meat. So the Paleo diet is out. Not to mention it was a little far fetched for me, but I think it would suit Phillip perfectly! I decided to give up my beloved Diet Dr. Peppers in December. Granted, I still have an occasional drink, but I'm trying to largely stick to water. My other goal is to keep my carbohydrate intake to less than 80g a day. It's times like this that I wish I had a nutritionist walking beside me all day long. I have started eating more things raw. I was always a fan of salads, so that's not incredibly hard.

I hope to stick to this for a long while. If nothing has changed within the next 6 months, I'll consider medical intervention. I'm just praying this makes the difference that I need. PCOS is a huge indicator for future Type 2 Diabetes patience. My dad and grandfather both have it. Both are actually underweight and very active, so it's not a lifestyle thing for them. I just hate the idea of being medicated at a later date. So maybe I can do something now to alter my fate a bit!

3. Make our marriage a priority in my life. How terrible does that sound? If I'm being honest, it needs to be said. Our lives literally revolve around Emory. I never understood why people with children never found time for one another. NOW I DO! No wonder the divorce rate is so high. When the kids skip off merrily to college, the parents sulk into divorce court because somewhere over the course of the last 18 years they lost sight of one of the most important aspects of their lives.

I don't want to be a statistic. This past December we were due to go away for our anniversary. I couldn't do it. I still can't! Aside from leaving Emory for an emergency cholecystectomy, I have been with him every day. I'm pretty sure had they allowed me to bring a five week old into surgery with me, I would have.

Truth is though, I've totally lost sight of our marriage and what it needs to look like in order to flourish. It's not fair to Phillip. It's not fair to me. If I'm being real honest, it's not fair to Emory either.

4. Revisit our budget. Several years ago Phillip picked up this book by Dave Ramsey. It was amazing how much this changed his perception of money! He was always one of the boys with lots of big, expensive toys. This book helped immensely!

Obviously, Emory has altered our budget. My plan was a breastfeed for the first year, thereby saving money on formula. WRONG! Since my surgery, the amount of fat in my milk greatly diminished, so formula is now a household staple. Thank the Lord for friends that send Similac coupons to me. (It's like Christmas when I open the mailbox!) Diapers! Oh heavens at the amount of diapers! I have determined that we have an awkwardly shaped child. There are some that work well and others that are a complete bust. Good news is that we have figured out what works. Bad news is that it still cost money. We started a college fund for him when he was two weeks old. Since then, we've had money automatically drafted from Phillip's weekly checks going into his account.

We also need to worry more about us. I'd like to eventually buy land somewhere around here. I'd like to save up so we don't have to borrow in order to do that. I'd also like to be able to give to others when they are in need. I'd love to sponsor a child through Compassion International or World Vision and watch them grow! I don't want to serve money, but rather to use it in service to others more often.

PRAY WITHOUT CEASING!

5. Have a more intentional and purposeful prayer life. That sounds so cliche, but it's true. I can post as many videos as I want depicting Emory's love for his bedtime prayers, but when it gets to that portion of my day I am more likely to pass out during my prayer than I am to finish it! I read my devotional every day, but lately I've been wondering what I'm doing to apply it. The Bible promises that if we pray with intention and faith that the Lord will answer our prayers, He will do just that. He may not answer them the way we expect/want, but He will answer.

Those are my "resolutions" for this lifetime. :-) What are yours?

Round 4 = Bigger and Better

In the Harris household we've been passing around some nasty cold/flu like bug since Thanksgiving. I was positive that some good ole RNR over Christmas break would remedy the problem. WRONG! I thought Round 3 was rough, but little did we know that Round 4 would come in with a punch!

Phillip has seemingly missed these last two rounds, but Emory and I are "enjoying" them in full swing. We haven't left the house all weekend. Phillip did some yard work yesterday. I decided that chicken noodle soup wasn't going to cut it, so I pulled myself together long enough to shower and make some chicken n' dumplings. They are, after all, a Southern girl's signature comfort food.

After dinner, I was in the kitchen cleaning up while Phillip was feeding Emory. Now, it's no secret that Emory is a reflux baby. This bug has his tummy all kinds of upset. He refuses to drink most of the time, so we've been trying to get food and pedialyte to stay down. Phillip has some kind of reflexes (I would have been covered). Here's how last night's feeding went:

Do you see that disgusting mess?! Holy cow! I ran straight for the bathroom. Emory definitely had a date with the bath pronto. Phillip, thank the good Lord, has a stronger stomach than myself. He did the clean up while I bathed Little Man.

I think this little plague needs a new home. Any takers? (It promises to make your baby nap like a champ. Emory is currently on a 4 hour run with this one!)

2012 = A Wealthy, Lucky Baby

Happy 2012! Little Man decided he wanted to be a part of the traditional New Year's meal. We already knew he loved black eyed peas, but we had no idea that he was a fan of mustard and collards! Turns out he really is a true Southern boy (just like Daddy).

We hope your year is off to a great start! Emory started his off with a yucky cold. Thanks to Grammie Harris for the Vick's humidifier when we were visiting! Between that thing, saline drops, and our snot sucker, we're almost over this thing...ALMOST. :-)

Our First Family Christmas

*WARNING: This is probably the longest post ever (but it's full of one really cute baby)!*

I love this time of year. There's so much to celebrate. More than anything, this Christmas I've been reminded of how fortunate we are to have come so far.

The circular ornament to the left of Emory is one of his sonograms from last year at this time. We found out that we were having a beautiful, healthy baby boy right after Thanksgiving 2010.

In case I've failed to mention, Emory is completely spoiled by everyone in our lives. My friend, Dana, gave him a Christmas present and used tinsel instead of tissue paper. Let's just say it was a BIG hit!

So much so that Emory decided to save some for later. This was on the bottom of his foot after I finished picking up.

I had an extra special visitor stop in for a little pre-Christmas visit. There are few people in this world that I love as much as my college roommate. She's truly such an amazing example of a true godly woman. She and her family were missionaries in Thailand for several years. Her kids are SO big now. I'm so thankful we got to spend some time catching up!

Emory has recently started this tilting thing. He'll be sitting there and suddenly decide that he wants to take the world in from a different angle.

We always celebrate Christmas with my family on Christmas Eve. Emory, of course, stole the show. Something about being the first grandbaby makes for one rotten child. :-) (I think he's worth it though.)

Did I mention we are teething? It's in FULL FORCE here folks! So everything, and I do mean EVERYTHING, goes in Emory's mouth.

His bib reads, "Are these people seriously my relatives?" Yes dear, we are.

Squishy and Em saying night night. (If you don't believe our child prays without ceasing, just look at all the pictures where he's smiling. At least 90% of those have Phillip or myself in the background saying his prayers with him.)

Our initial plan was to wait and travel to Florence on Christmas morning. I couldn't do it. I was exhausted. Somehow my week off went from scrubbing the house to repainting the trim around the house and organizing everything. (Currently, I have a half-painted/half-organized disaster of a house.) On our way home I asked Phillip if I could run into the house, pack stuff for the next two days and head out that night. He agreed.

I literally threw stuff together, grabbed two gifts for Emory, and ran out of the house. We arrived in Florence a little after 1 AM. Luckily, Grammie Harris stays up very late this time of year wrapping presents. :-) We pulled up, unloaded the dogs, gave Emory a bottle, and well since it was technically Christmas morning, we let Emory open the two presents I picked up for him. One gift was just a toy that he had actually gravitated towards in Target one day. The other was a keepsake that probably means more to Phillip and myself than it will to Emory...at least for the next decade or two.

Daddy has to help with the hard packaging. Luckily, like every good Southern man, he come equipped with a pocket knife.

His silver rattle is engraved on one end with his full name and on the other end with "Our Miracle" and his birthday. I hope this does end up leading to a conversation on day about how very special he is to us.

The next day Phillip's family wasn't getting together until 4 PM. There was lots to be done though. Phillip had to sneak away and put together the grill everyone bought Aunt Diane. We brought it down with us, so she had no idea. We visited Emma first and let her and Emory exchange gifts. Somehow I missed a picture of her opening her present. Emory thought she needed Crayola Color Wonder markers and paper along with a little travel lap desk.

Emma found a precious giraffe that sings the ABC song for Emory.

The giraffe has not left his side since he got it. Currently, it's in his crib by the oh-so-essential Sleep Sheep.

Aunt Diane bought Emory his first ever tractor. It came complete with a trailer. Of course, Daddy had to hook the giraffe up with a ride. ;-)

Ummm yes, our child likes anything with wheels. I'm seriously outnumbered in this house.

Emory was due for a nap, Daddy was working on the grill (although I ALMOST got caught in a fib to Aunt Diane), and Mama was busy helping Grammie Harris cut gift card holders on the cricut. Christmas dinner started promptly at 4 PM with no one but Emory in attendance (thank you to Aunt Diane for watching him). We all rolled in about 30 minutes late...for good reason.

Emory got to see/meet all sorts of people. He FINALLY got to meet one of Phillip's second cousins, Stephanie, and her husband Tom. He also got to spend some time with Aunt Gladys!

Emory met Margaret, Stephanie's sister, earlier this month so I think this was payback. ;-)

This was probably the most ridiculously painful series of pictures ever...and we still didn't end up with a decent one. Whatever, Santa Em needed a bottle and a nap!

After dinner drew to a close, it was time for the madness to begin. And by madness, I mean Phillip's mama goes crazy this time of year. Her grandkids are beyond spoiled (their parents aren't hurtin' either).

Santa (aka:Nicki) brought the girls a Wii for Christmas.


Thank the Lord he liked this because it WILL be his best friend. Yay for No Spill Bowls!!! (Thanks Heather.)

Our visit was so short (less than 48 hours). We got to fit in a few minutes with Mrs. Miriam before we ran back home. She gave Emory some fun stuff too. He's a HUGE fan of the light up ducks for the bath. I'll have to take a picture of these. HILARIOUS! Luckily, Phillip has time off again so we'll be seeing everyone for a not-so-rushed visit over the New Year.

When we got home we decided to do our little family Christmas. My mom called on the way home and asked if they could come watch Emory open his presents. What the heck, we didn't care!

First things first, unload the stocking.

Next, open and make sure the barn puzzle tastes ok.

Finally, be sure that the socks are not water resistant.

Emory became quite a pro at pulling bows.

Phillip and I never really go all out for Christmas. Anything we really need we already have. So aside from some stocking stuffers and a few clothing items we found on sale, we didn't do anything. EXCEPT...

Phillip bought me my first ever new car!

You read that correctly. I wanted nothing to do with the process. He knew this. He came home during Pamela and David's visit, handed me keys, told me "Happy 4th Anniversary, Happy 28th Birthday, and Merry Christmas!" I found it very amusing. Oddly enough, this was more intimidating than buying a house, so I'm glad he took care of it. Maybe it's because I worked in real estate law for a decade, but that process didn't seem to be nearly as daunting as buying a car. I have been driving the car my parents bought for me when I was in the 8the grade (so the car was nearly 19 years old). I can't part with it. Who could after such a bonding experience? However, now we have a family car! I wish I had pictures, but the dealership is currently replacing the cloth seats with leather ones. I'll post something later. Good job to an awesome hubby!

A few of my other favorite things:

So my mom told me that I had the worst pots ever when she was here during my surgical recovery cooking. For Christmas she and my dad bought us REAL pots and pans. I didn't know my others were fake, but holy cow these new ones are A.MAZ.ING! I LOVE them. I want to find a way to display them. They are too pretty! Grammie Harris sent us home with not one, not two, but three boxes of diapers, a gift card for formula (whoo hoo), and a BABY BULLET! I didn't know I wanted these until I opened it. Granted, it was Emory's present but I'm almost positive I am exponentially more excited about this than he will ever be.

My parents made us all quilts this year. This one is mine. Love love love. Surprisingly, my mom and dad had never done this before. You should see the ones my sisters have too!

Sorry this post was so long, but we had a busy year. We hope you enjoyed a blessed time celebrating the birth of Jesus with your family and friends.

8 Months and Exciting News!

Christmas completely snuck up on me this year. Normally, my shopping is finished by Thanksgiving. I don't even think I started until the beginning of December. Having a baby sure will take an organized woman and turn her into a mess!

One thing's for sure, having a baby is the BEST GIFT EVER. Our Little Man hit the 8 month mark last Friday. Wowzers! He's SUCH a ham. I love his little personality. He's all about getting messy (takes after Daddy), but he also has this serious/quizzical thing going on (I hope he's not as serious as I am). He rolls his tongue all the time. Really loud, constant noise, ALL.THE.TIME. Over the past week he's been tilting his head to the side when you talk to him. Phillip was holding him on Saturday while I was sending an email. Next thing I know there's a little Emory face peaking out behind the side of my computer. Cracked me up! We adore our sweet boy.

My boys. Surprisingly, Emory had gone without a nap for almost 10 hours. He won't sleep unless he's home in his crib. Pretty happy for a VERY sleep baby.

I would apologize for the spit up on the shirt, but it has become a part of our life. He's just as cute with it anyway. :-)

We're also working on Round 2 of a nasty cold.

OH! The exciting news! Drum roll please...

Since Emory had to go to the doctor because he has been sick, they decided to weigh him. Guess who gained TWO POUNDS IN ONE MONTH!? That's right! This brings our grand total to 17 lbs 12 oz. Talk about stoked. I was BEYOND thrilled. He BARELY gained one pound in three months, so two pounds in one month was above and beyond our wildest expectations.

7 Months Old (Two Weeks Late)

I have no idea why, but blogging has become a chore over the past few weeks. I would apologize, but I'm having fun playing with a very personable little guy.

Emory went to the doctor on November 16th (the 7 month mark) to check his weight gain (or lack thereof). He is a super tall baby! He is 28.5 inches long! However, little man only weighed 15 pounds 6 ounces at his weigh in. Meaning that he has only gained half a pound since he was 4 months old. :-( Before I get into all of that, I'm going to give you all some pictures to prove that a skinny baby can be a super cute baby. Ummm yes, he's too precious for words!

He is such a good baby. I don't know what happened, but sometime between the 6th and 7th months he went from an often fussy baby to a very happy baby. Granted, I think his fussiness has a lot to do with the MASSIVE amount of food that the child does not keep down. Poor Emory definitely has reflux, so we're trying to work through some of the kinks. I think he's actually started gaining a fair amount of weight over the past week or so. We just add rice to EVERYTHING! For once, you can see a little belly pudge. I love it!

I posted not long ago about Project 52 and our attempt to really carve out time for one another. I have no idea how many dates we have been one, but we started dance lessons, had movie night, watched a game (or 10) together, etc. LivingSocial is a great place to find deals! Last week they offered classes at Wine & Design for half off! Right up our alley! For $34 bucks we had a night out sans baby (which we both needed after Saturday), hung out with friends, and came home with two "beautiful" paintings. :-) (Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right?!)

Michelle and I were in grad school together. So glad we reconnected through the Bible study!

We are beyond talented. (Don't ask what I'm doing with my foot. Phillip did. I have no answer.)

This date was seriously JUST the thing we needed. It'd been a rough week with Emory, so it was nice to get out. (Big thanks to Nana and Poppy for babysitting!)

Halloween 2011

Wow, this is sad. My Halloween post is coming almost a week after I posted about Emory's first Christmas tree. Let me assure you they happened in the right order.

This year we went to the McLeod Farm Fall Fest with Phillip's family. It was so good to see our nieces and his sister. Holy cow! Can we say BRRRR! The weather would have been really enjoyable, but the wind cut right through you!

Emory had his first taste of a pickle...well outside of me. He had lots of pickle while he hibernated for 9 months.

Taylor insisted everyone needed to watch her on the tractors.

Wind! It ruined our only chance at a decent photo op. Oh well! 80s rock bands have nothing on this girl!

The girls got balloon animals. Not long after this Uncle Phillip and Taylor had to take her horse to the ICU unit. :-)

Emory loves him some Grammy!

Surprisingly, after no nap for 4 hours he was a happy baby on the ride home. Please note that I did not say "sleepy" but we'll take what we can get.

On Sunday, we went to church, attended Emory's Baby Dedication class, and then came home to carve our pumpkins. We realize it was a little late (hopefully that means it's ok that they are STILL on the front porch. We are so behind this year!)

Project 31: Day 26

Realizing now that I didn't exactly finish strong, I do want to go back and complete the last few days that I missed. Let's just say that starting a whole lot of jobs and stuff around our house has been crazy. So, I can't promise this will get done in the next five days, but it will get done...eventually. :-)

Day 26: What do you hope your grandchildren will say about you one day when you are gone?

This is a bit too deep for my liking. :-) Don't get my wrong, I definitely want to leave a legacy worth remembering. However, I'm trying to not think so much about tomorrow. Instead, I'm giving it the ole college try at living in the moment (responsibly speaking, though). Here's about as far ahead as I've thought:

I want Emory to realize that he is a priceless gift from God. I hope our grandchildren will know the same. I want to commit to raising him in the shadow of the cross. I don't want to teach oppressive religion though. I want our children and grandchildren to have a healthy fear of God, but more than anything I desire for them to live a life of abandon in Christ.

I considered (for much longer than I care to admit) getting a tattoo across the inside of my wrist with the word "undignified" written in. I love this story in II Samuel of King David. He didn't care who saw him worshiping the Lord. He didn't worry about what his neighbors would think of him. His worship was for God. His song, his dance, his HEART was for Christ! I want my legacy to be like that. Our children and grandchildren (and maybe we'll be lucky enough to be around and see some great-grands) will know that we are committed to God.

In lighter terms though - I want them to read! I love books. Reading is a gift. I don't think kids in America truly appreciate how precious this gift is. I also want them to laugh. I want them to find the small things in life and relish them. I want them to feel loved. I want to hug them as tight as I can. I have a rather independent baby when it comes to snuggling and it breaks my heart. However on those rare night when he's wanting to just be held and hugged tight, I jump in with both feet and LIVE for those moments. I want them to see a marriage that works. Phillip and I aren't always perfect, but we have fun, we laugh, we love, and goodness knows we have shed a tear or two. I think it's important for our kids to know these things about us. It's even more important for them to see us pray together to overcome hardships.

I realize this might be scattered, but that's my life/brain right now. Here's to hoping I leave something worth remembering. What impression do you hope to leave behind?

Emory's Christmas Tree

I realize that I have a lot of blogging to catch up on (finishing Project 31, posting about Halloween, fall happenings, etc.). I wish I could blame it on laziness, but I just got tired folks! Starting a teaching job mid-semester is tough stuff. Teaching and helping with the EC department is exhausting...and I'm only part time!

Anywho, last year I spent Christmas (and every other holiday for that matter) sick due to our pregnancy. Totally worth it, don't get me wrong. However, we didn't even paint our annual Christmas ornament. It's the first one we've missed since we started dating in 2005! We'll make an extra one this year. So I'm making up for lost time and decorating early.

This is the first year Christmas caught me by surprise. I had a baby and now all of the sudden it's almost Thanksgiving. Where did the time go?! I haven't even listened to a lot of Christmas music (except of course Justin Bieber's new CD...cough, Mere Mere, cough). First things first, Emory's room. I've always wanted each of our children to have their own little tree. I couldn't wait to decorate Emory's. I searched high and low for ornaments I liked. Nothing! Then we went to my home away from home, Target. Lo and behold, it hit me. They had the cutest knit ornaments. These will work for boys or girls. If he gets these in the future and places it in his mouth, no harm done. Plus, these ornaments will last him a few years (and be passed down to the other children I am trusting the Lord to provide us)!

Yay! I love it! Emory does too. He bounces when he sees his tree.

I have a teething child that refuses to stop screaming and crying. I haven't heard anything other than his screams for almost 48 hours now. TELL ME HOW TO FIX HIS PROBLEM!
Laundry that is piling up faster than I can think thanks to said child also spitting up NON-STOP! Suggestions on formula because I'm losing it. NOTHING lasts longer than 5 minutes as far as wardrobes go.
I have a car seat that requires reassembling because Emory filled it up with spit up.
Dishes that need to be done.
Dinner that needs to be cooked.
I start a new job tomorrow (NOT prepared), but I tutor before teaching at the new job (again NOT prepared).
I can't get our bank saga fixed, so we can't use our debit cards. (Our bank had select accounts that were debited their deposits instead of credited for them. So our account is in the negative BY HUNDREDS at the moment. It was suppose be fixed by 5 PM today, but alas it is not.)
I feed like crap thanks to infected lymph nodes that manifest their symptoms much like a cold/flu. I don't know if the medication is impacting Emory, but I don't think that's his problem.
I am two seconds from curling up in the fetal position and crying because my husband won't be home to help until almost 2 AM. I'm so far beyond overwhelmed that I can't move.

If someone finds my sanity running around, please send it back to me. I really want to do well at this new job, but there's no way my mind will be in the game with all I have going on at the moment.

Project 31: Day 24

Day 24:What is Jesus teaching you presently?

TRUST! You see, I have an issue with trust. I don't trust anyone. Ever. It's sad, but true. I always expect the worst out of a person. I suppose, in a way, that it's a defense mechanism. If you always expect to be disappointed or let down then a person can't truly hurt you. Makes perfect sense (or at least it does to me)!

Lately, I'm learning that the key to a relationship with Christ is trust. I THINK that I know what's best for my life, but He KNOWS with utter certainty what I need. Sometimes I may need to experience pain to see the light on the other side.

I know last week I had my meltdown over Emory's lack of development, but at the end of the day I looked at how far God has brought our family. From infertility, through years on drugs, through a horrible pregnancy, and into this blessed thing called parenthood. If He can do all that then surely gaining a few pounds is the least of my worries. So I pulled myself up by my bootstraps and started feeding that baby. Maybe it's not what I want to feed him, but I'm sure there is a lesson behind all of this. I just have to TRUST!

Project 31: Day 22

Day 22. What are some needs that need to be met in your community? Blog about how to extend your hand to those who need you.

I'm really excited about this prompt. Some of you know that a few months ago I reached out to many friends in the area. I've felt the Lord tugging at my heart for a while about starting a Bible study. I have to say that it was quite a leap. It's intimidating putting yourself out there like that. I was shocked at how many people jumped at the opportunity to join the study...and bring friends. We have so much fun meeting.

Aside from the obvious purpose of the Bible study, I really felt compelled to make the group about giving back as well. We all know that the economy is bad, but I think everyone sacrificing a little can add up to a BIG difference. I didn't want it to be all about organizations I wanted to support. I think people have different passions for a reason. Therefore, at each meeting a different individual is responsible for coming up with our outreach project.

Our first meeting I chose to suggest Christmas cards for kids awaiting sponsorship through Compassion International. At our second meeting another one of our ladies (you can check out her blog here) wanted our group to donate needed items to Matthews HELP Center. It was great. All of us brought 5 or more items. Do the math! I'm still waiting to find out about our next project, but we're also due to help Turning Point in November. This is one of my favorite aspects of our new Bible study.

Also, I just have to throw this in, I picked up the labels today for Operation Christmas Child. This is something I want to do with Emory every single year. He might not understand it this year or in the coming few, but I want him to grow up knowing that despite our inability to give him everything he WANTS, we give him everything he NEEDS and so much more.

I know you try to be the man God wants you to be for both Emory and myself. I realize this is a journey both of us have to take together. A Day of Firsts

I officially have my first teaching job. Lucky for me, it's part-time. I'm SO excited about this position. I have wanted to teach for a while, but I am not willing to leave Emory all day, every day. I saw the posting for this position and I LOVE the school, so I decided to go for it. One week later, 2 interviews, and a confirmation phone call later and it's all mine!!! I get to teach one class and work with the EC department the rest of the time. (If you are keeping tabs, I have four "jobs" now and I think I'm getting addicted to this whole tutoring/teaching deal. I don't feel like any of my "jobs" are really jobs.)

Now, during the confirmation phone call today Emory had a first. He rolled off the couch! ...and the Most Horrible Mother of the Year Award goes to this chick right here. This week has been a rough one for poor Em and now he went and rolled off the couch. I decided to make him a bubble wrap outfit. The fall wasn't super high and didn't seem to phase him, but boy do I feel like a uber-bad mom! I had him all trapped with pillows and everything. Lesson learned folks! Do not leave this child for one second. What happened to those sleeping 20 hours days?

Six Month Milestone

This past Sunday our Little Emory passed that 6 month milestone. It hit me like a ton of bricks: THEY GROW UP SO QUICKLY! We are so in love with this little guy. He has gotten quite a personality as of late.

He had his check-up at the doctor on Monday. We got a few shots. He's 27.75 inches long and 14 pounds 12 ounces. Now compare that to his 4 month stats ( 26.75 inches and 14 pounds 11 ounces) and something is askew. The doctor was none too pleased with his weight gain (or lack thereof). He sent us to another office to make sure their scale wasn't broken. Indeed, it was not. Sad.

We have been given one month to put some weight on our sweet buddy. He has been eating baby food for 2 months now, so Mama and Emory hit up the organic baby food section hunting down some meat. It smells and looks horrible, but Emory takes it like a champ. His favorite (by far) is banana yogurt though. The doctor said to give him as many calories as he'll take, so we're doing just that. Hopefully, we will go back in a month and he'll have little chub rolls everywhere! :-)

Emory is all about laughing and talking lately. The best feeling in the world is when I've been talking to him and out of the blue he starts cackling with that fabulous laugh of his. He squeals at his giraffe. We get to hear his morning conversations over the monitor. I always thought that when I was trying to sleep and some kid interrupted that with their morning nonsense that I'd be mad because I am NOT a morning person. Phillip and I often times just lie in bed and laugh at him. Emory's best friend will definitely be Mason. He lights up when Mason comes into a room. He likes Gracie, but his is giddy over Mason's presence. He LOVES faces, but only particular features of people:

Pop - his nose and ears
Nana - her glasses
Mama - her mouth
Daddy (THIS CRACKS ME UP) - the gray triangle!!! LOVE IT!

Project 31: Day 19 & 20

Y'all! I am Southern to the T on this one. I can't make my own favorite meal though, but that probably bodes well for the waistline. I don't necessarily have a comfort food, but I def have a favorite "auto-pick-me-up" kind of meal. Drum roll please...

I can't make a good tasting batch of this to save my life (this was my last and final attempt). Oh my goodness, they are heaven though! Love love love!

Day 20: Write about your job and why you love it or hate it.

I don't know that I have one particular "job" so to speak. I consider my primary responsibilities to be Emory's caregiver and Phillip's companion. I also work as a contracted tutor. Lastly, I work managing the books for my parents' business.

It sounds like a lot, but total all of the paying jobs only equate to about 10+ hours outside of the home each week. Emory goes with me to the florist, so that doesn't really count at all. Tutoring is more of a blessing for me than a gain for my students. I don't tutor wealthy kids. I work through two different programs, but I love seeing the potential in some of these little ones!

I LOVE my job as Emory's mama! I get to give him kisses all day. I get to watch him discover his own voice, his own feet, and his own hands. I get to see him converse with his giraffe. I don't miss these things by being away from him. It's SO rewarding to know that he's being cared for by the couple that loves him the most!

As per being Phillip's companion, that's not a shabby position either. I love that we get to spend time together in the mornings. I wish we could have dinner tonight in the evenings, but you make it work when you have to. We get to laugh and hang out while the rest of you people head to work! It's ok to be jealous. :-)

I feel like I have jobs every where, but each of the hats I get to wear serves a special purpose in my life. God has blessed me richly in these areas. I can't wait to see what else is in store!

Project 31: Day 17

Today I am going to have to play catch up. Yesterday was NOT a good day folks. One of the "oh my heavens, I'm a failure as a mother" kind of days. I'll write about that when I'm a little more stable emotionally...and that is not today.

I realize this is pathetic, but I LOVE my bed. Sad, but true. It could be because I never see it anymore, but I love it nonetheless. My heart does a little flip every time I pull the covers over my head. :-)

I know some of you hate this stuff, but snow sends me over the moon with delight. I love it. I'm SO heartbroken when those weather people predict it and we get some ridiculously small covering. I LOVE snow! It doesn't hurt when that handsome man on the left (not the horse) is there to enjoy it with me.

Project 31: Day 15 & 16

The challenge for Day 15 is to write to encourage a friend and for Day 16 is to tell a young girl in your life what beauty means. I have two sisters, one of which is about to get herself hitched and the other is still finding her way in this world. I figured since I consider my sisters friends and they will always be little girls to me, I'd kill two birds with one stone. :-) I think this message is more pertinent to the "finding her way" sister, but both of you can appreciate it.

Babygirl,

I hope you never forget that you were born 100% perfect, just the way you are. Never try to fit someone else's idea of who or what you should be. Life is about dancing to your own music. Learn to enjoy the little moments.

You have the best sense of humor I've ever encountered. You have no idea how valuable you are to everyone that truly matters in your life. Once you find your purpose, all the other pieces will fall into place.

You are beautiful inside and out. Not because you wear the right clothes, or dye your hair the right color, or have a great guy. You are beautiful because of your spirit. Project 31: Day 13

I can't seem to keep up. Technically I should be writing Day 15's post. First for 13 though!

What would you like to change about yourself for the better?

~Worry less! This is a huge struggle for me. If I got paid for stressing, well I'd buy Oprah's network from her. I KNOW that I am suppose to pray and place things at the Lord's feet. I do. Then I turn around and pick them right back up. Oh ME of little faith! I've always been fairly self-sufficient, which is great in life but horrible for your walk with God.

~Give more! I need to give more time to my child, more love to my husband, and more kindness to the world around me. Kinda generic, but it's true.

~Live with abandon! This is a new goal of mine. I'm trying to shake off the expectations and opinions of others and live my life the way I see fit. I only need to worry about pleasing God. It's liberating. Scary, but liberating!

Project 31: Day 12

I am not sure I should be allowed to write this post today. This week has been one trying week. I feel like I'm digging my feet in and praying for everything to stop falling around me (I've got a flare for the dramatic).

Today's prompt is to write about what wears me out as a woman.

I can deal with physical fatigue. I'm a champ. I can rally around those sleepless nights and keep my productivity levels sky high. I can do all the menial tasks that befall a housewife. I can even tolerate some lengthy days with a teething baby.

I can't deal with rejection. I'm not talking about a job rejection. I'm not talking about a door slammed in your face when you're trying to sell the latest vacuum cleaner system. I'm talking about personal rejection. I find myself trying to determine whether people will like me based on what I say or do.

Lately, I've determined that I just don't care. Maybe it's exhaustion. Maybe it's indifference. Maybe it's maturing past this superficial phase in life. Whatever the case, I'm sorry, but now there are more important aspects of my life.

Here's an example: I started to put a Bible verse up today on facebook. No big deal right? I actually found myself second guessing whether I should do that because I may upset people that don't share my beliefs. Everyone wants to be like don't they? I have friends and family members that are so far from my belief system that we may as well be night and day. I decided I don't care. I'm not rude to them. They don't have to believe what I do (although, I will say that my God is an awesome God).

So why do I care about people that seldom interact with me? Rejection is personal. On any level it feels like a sucker punch to the gut. Maybe this is universal, but I feel like women worry about this more. Men aren't emotional creatures. We are. I find myself vested in people (despite their lack of presence or impact in my life).

I started a Bible study this month. I've had this nagging feeling for a while. I contacted a bunch of ladies that I knew in the area. Some I had not spoken to in years. I didn't care. I felt a calling. Guess what? I had some "no thank yous". I had some "maybes". However, I had a lot of "YES you have no idea how much I needed this" as well. The group of ladies that meet in my home every other Thursday are awesome! Rejection, for once, didn't win.

I'm tired of carrying that burden around with me. I promise to like you for whatever you are and whatever you believe. I hope you feel the same towards me. If not, that's ok. I'm from the South, I know how to kill with kindness. ;-)

Project 31: Day 11 (A Little Late)

Y'all know I love some cold weather. My taste buds, however, love Spring. We believe in some fruit in the Harris household. Fresh fruit is ALWAYS within arm's reach. Lately, I've been a little sad because strawberries are officially OUT. :-( I try to buy from local farmers and produce stands, so they have none of these delightful little treasures at my usual stops until Spring rolls back around.

Day 11 is a day for dishes! I'm suppose to post one of my favorite recipes with a picture. I didn't get to make this scrumptious dish this past year, what with having a baby and surgery it just completely slipped my mind! However, do this! Save it for next year. ONLY MAKE IT ONCE A YEAR! That's my warning. You will be the size of a house if you make it regularly. Want to know why?

It's Paula Deen's Strawberry Delight, and good heavens it is slap your mama AMAZING! You can find the super easy recipe here. Take my word on this. I've been making it for years and it's always a hit. The recipe calls for frozen sweetened strawberries, but we don't do those in our house. Buy fresh! If you must add a little bit of sugar and let them sit for a few hours in the fridge, but most of the time if they are fresh they are sweet enough. Plus the rest of the recipe is rich enough to compensate for any lack of sweetener on your strawberries.

Let me know what you think about this little concoction! I can't take credit. That Paula, she sure does know how to make things taste great (even if it does have half a day's worth of calories in it).

I know, I know. I missed yesterday's Project 31 post. I'll get that up later tonight. I had to share this first though.

As some of you know, I have been tutoring a foster child lately. This student lives in a group home, attends a day facility (instead of school), and is reading on the first grade level at best and he is 12 years old. He wants to do better in school and is so respectful during my time with him.

Last week I left him with a list of spelling words. This week I brought him a mini quiz on those words. I told him that if he got at least a 80 on the quiz, he would get a prize. The kid did AMAZING. Made a 100! So I asked him to tell me his favorite kind of candy.

Student: I don't know.
Me: What do you mean? It's candy! You have to like something better than all the others.
Student: No, I really don't have any idea.

Something hit me in that moment, a realization I suppose. I felt so stupid. He lives in a group home. He doesn't even attend a normal school. He probably never sees candy. His life isn't full of love and positive-reinforcement. His life is about making sure he gets processed through the system.

Broke my heart!

We spent the rest of our time reading One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. I wish I had a camera when I broke out that book. He recognized it! He struggled through 30 minutes of reading aloud to me, but he told me that he loved the book. I wanted to cry. I read it to Emory all the time. Emory might not have his life laid out on a silver platter for him, but he has a mama that reads to him and a daddy that will play football with him. My student has no one specifically devoted to him.

Our session ended and I gave him the bag of M&Ms and the pack Starburst. He made a 100. He deserved it. He looked at me, looked at the candy, acted like he wanted to hug me (but I'm not sure that we're allowed to do that), he just smiled from ear to ear and said "Thank you!!!" and ran off.

This week has quite literally been filled with one disappointment after another, but today put it all in perspective. God is SO good!

Bain of My Existence Bringing Laughter

So Phillip LOVES some Trident gum. Seriously, the boy goes through 2 or 3 packs a week. Now I am happy he will chew a gum that also helps clean your teeth, but he has a big problem with throwing the wrappers in the trash.

This isn't a new phenomena. It's been going on for years. Lately though, I've learned that the small things bug me more than usual. So I've been asking him to put them in the trash A LOT.

However, it seems that the more I beg for them to be placed in the trash where they belong the more often I find them elsewhere. Seriously, I've found them in the garage, on the counter, IN MY FLOWER BED (explain that to me). Most often though they are in the laundry, especially the dark loads.

The other day I found one when folding the clothes. Phillip happened to be on the couch, so I nicely walked over, held up my find, and PROCEEDED TO STICK IT UP HIS NOSE. That's right. We both laughed SO hard. I stepped back, folded my arms, and asked him if I had made my point yet. He said yes, but then we realized the gum wrapper was STUCK IN HIS NOSE! It took a few minutes, but he got it out.

I found a wrapper in tonight's load. Guess my point wasn't made. However now instead of getting frustrated when I see a wrapper freshly out of the wash, I laugh because I just imagine Phillip's face and his efforts to retrieve the previous wrapper from his nostril.

Project 31: Day 10

What is Jesus teaching you as a wife, mom, or friend (or just a woman in general)?

As a Wife - I would be lying if I said that I didn't think about fibbing a little on this one. I think everyone likes to portray their marriages as "perfect," but let's be honest it's two people working together to make a family. There are bound to be moments of strife.

Having a baby changes everything. I don't think I can say that enough. I don't mean this in a bad way, but Phillip went from being my top priority to somewhere on my top five after Emory, housewife duties, washing spit up off me, etc. Want to know where skewed priorities send a marriage? Onto the roller coaster of disconnectedness. That's largely why we started Project 52.

I would find myself getting so frustrated with things that Phillip would do or say that wouldn't normally have bothered me. None of that is Phillip's fault necessarily, it's my short fuse from over-extending myself. So I'm learning to prioritize and hold my tongue (some days are better than others). Patience is a virtue I've never ever possessed and I'm convinced that the Lord is using this season in my life to teach me how to become an patient person.

As a mama - Holy moly I could write a book. Most importantly, I'm learning how to love in an unconditional way. I'm convinced that the love a parent possesses for their child is the closest we can ever come to understanding how much God loves us.

I also have a HUGE problem with control. Guess what you can't control with a baby? ANY and EVERYTHING! From being on time for church to missing lunch dates because someone is teething and not suitable for a public appearance. I can't control whether he gets sick or whether he's 100% healthy. I can try my hardest, but there are things that will happen in Emory's life that are simply going to have to be placed in the Lord's hands. Granted they are great and mighty hands, but for some reason I keep trying to think mine are better. How foolish of me! This is where I'm beginning to learn the power of prayer!

Lastly as a mom, the good Lord is continuing this lifelong lesson of relinquishing worry into His hands. I am an admitted professional worrier. Seriously, vacations usually have to be kept to fairly short half-week increments because I start to visualize our house up in flames with our precious pups inside or the cat turning on a water faucet and flooding the entire place. Having a baby only made those fears exponentially worse. I've gotten better about leaving Emory. In fact, I just accepted a job working a whole 4 hours a week. So I'll be leaving Emory with a babysitter for 3 hours for two days a week! True progress for me! Not to mention, Phillip and I booked a trip to The Homestead for our anniversary. Luckily, Emory has a super awesome Grammy Harris that will be coming up to stay with him for the four days we're away. I'm sure it will kill me to leave him, but I know he's in fantastic hands.

Progress is a-brewin' in this household and the Lord's the one stirring the pot! What's our sweet Jesus teaching you in your life???

Project 31: Day 9

Maybe this is just the woman in me, but I find it much easier to recognize the faults in myself rather than the redemptive qualities. However, today I am suppose to talk about the virtues I value in myself.

Honesty - Granted, and I've said this many times before, I am brutally honest so I need to work on that. However, I admire that trait in people. It's a characteristic that I hope to encourage in our son.

Compassion - Oddly enough when I was typing this my dear friend sent me a text saying that she returned home from a trip and found that her beloved pet had passed. My heart literally sank to my stomach. Don't get me wrong, I'm an animal lover for sure, but this pet was literally a huge portion of her world. My heart hurts for her. I am thankful that I can empathize with the people in my life rather easily. It gives me the desire to connect with them and try to make their lives a little better.

Loving mother - This is probably my favorite. Does Emory have the finest clothing? Nope. Will he have to work for some of the things he wants in life? You bet. Does he have two parents that promise to lovingly admonish and encourage him? Absolutely!!! This is the greatest role God has even given me. It's more rewarding and challenging than anything I could ever imagine. I'm not perfect at this role. I've already had days that ended with me feeling like a failure, but I was blessed enough to wake up the next morning and try all over again.

Precious in a Bottle

I realize that I am partial, but seriously this kid is ADORABLE. Phillip got home early the other night and gave Emory his bath. I got to snap a few pictures afterward.

Emory LOVES bath time. This is easily one of the best ways to make this boy happy. He and Daddy played with all of his bath trucks. I was wondering why Gracie was wet...until I went back there and saw Phillip teaching Emory how to shoot her with the water. Heavens help me!

Project 52: Week 2

For this week's date we decided to take advantage of this GORGEOUS Carolina weather and visit Aw Shucks Farm for a few hours today.

It's been a long week in the Harris household. Phillip, yes PHILLIP, got sick. Then yesterday Emory started this little cough, followed by lots of fun stuff flowing from orifices today. :-( We don't want to leave our little guy while he's a little under the weather, so we took him along for the fun.

Emory got to go through his first corn maze, see lots of fun farm animals, play with some pumpkins, and get really tired (just in time for the Clemson/Boston College game).

These goats made me miss the pigmy goats we had in Weddington.

They were too full, so they wouldn't eat out of our hands.

So cute, but so smelly.

Charlie, the mini-horse, was not too sure about Emory. Emory's sentiments towards Charlie were much the same.

Poor buddy. His eyes totally tell the world how he feels. :-(

We had tons of fun though! Great news...Clemson remains undefeated this season. Phillip was concerned about Tajh Boyd following the injury he sustained in the 3rd quarter. I told him he wasn't allowed to check on Boyd for 10 hours (the length of time he slept during my 21 hours of labor...he still insists that one of us needed to be well rested). He frowned and then ignored me. :-)

Project 31: Day 8

This challenge makes me laugh. I'm suppose to share a beauty secret.

Are you kidding me?

I have none. I consider my day a success if I get a shower and fix my hair. I am lucky. I take after my dad's side of the family. They have great skin. In fact, I have a bad habit of going to bed without washing my make-up off. Fortunately, I've never really had a problem with acne or anything.

The only real suggestion I have is total common sense...WEAR SUNSCREEN DAILY! I use a moisturizer on my face that has a SPF of 25. Even if I don't put make-up on, I still use the moisturizer with SPF (specifically Mary Kay's TimeWise Day Solution pictured below). This happens to work well for my skin because I've found that a lot of moisturizers leave my skin looking oily. This doesn't. Love it!

Project 31: Day 7

Day 7's challenge is to write a post encouraging another beautiful woman. I thought long and hard about the potential candidates and finally settled on one amazing lady. You see, I have this wonderfully hilarious friend from college. I think we owe our friendship to Chaucer, Ovid, Virgil, and the like (and we can both recite the Prologue to the Canterbury Tales in Middle English...you should be so lucky). She's been through her share of ups and downs, but has kept a pretty positive attitude through it all. Maybe I felt the need to write this to her due to how drastically her friendship has impacted my life. So with no further adieu:

I don't know that this post will make sense to anyone but you, and I'm not quite sure I care. Friendship, I've learned, is largely defined not by the amount of time you've spent together but in the dedication and love you invested in that relationship. Oddly enough, I can't remember the day we met or what we talked about. I remember passing notes while Dr. Grathwohl lectured, I remember a pink jacket that should be framed for all the wear and tear it endured, I remember your encouraging words when I carried a horrific brick around for a week, and I remember your laugh.

I bet you didn't know this, but I'm persuaded that your laugh gives life to those around you. There have been countless days when your random sense of humor has pulled me back off that proverbial ledge. I love going out to restaurants and watching people wonder why you are so happy (it could be because you just scored a box of fortune cookies since you weren't happy with the one you first received). It is infectious, but not in a CDC kind of way. :-)

You have no idea how valued you are. You have a magnetic personality. Your friends want nothing more than to see all of your dreams come rolling into your lap. You deserve it...AND SO MUCH MORE. I know you have rough days and I want you to know that I will always be here to carry any burden with you so you don't have to bare the weight alone. Project 31: Day 6 (a day late)

Begging forgiveness, yesterday was INSANE in the membrane. (Yes, I just typed that.)

BIG day yesterday - I got a job and I started a Bible study! This post isn't about either of those things, BUT the "job" is a supervising teacher position with a local tutorial agency. Yay! This keeps me in the educational field without being full-time. I only work 4 hours a week! That means no big days away from Emory AND a resume booster if the time comes when I decide to seek a full-time position.

As per the Bible study, I moved back here and had a serious issue with not being able to connect personally around this joint. So I decided to take a leap of faith after having this nagging urge to start a group for a few years. Guess what? Satan totally tried to kick my butt (and the derrieres of other members). Seriously, there are 15 ladies committed to this group and seven of us made it. Granted, three of which I knew about before and were simply scheduling issues (which is totally understandable with a group that large). However, all in one week the following happened: one girl got meningitis, one had emergency surgery, two had last minute school and work issues, etc. Seriously? Guess what we did? We had Bible study anyway! It was a great success. I am so excited about this group of ladies! I know there are great things in store for us!!!

On to Day 6! Question: Has the world's definition of beauty ever jaded you?

Answer: BEEP YES! I'm going to be real honest here. I struggled for a little over 10 years with eating/body image issues. I think everyone has a past when it comes to body image (and if you don't stop now and THANK GOD).

I have to credit Phillip for helping me through a lot of that. I also think that with age comes a sense of confidence that is simply lacking when you're an adolescent. Am I the most gorgeous thing in the world by society's standards? NOPE! Does that bother me? NOT ONE LITTLE BIT! Want to know why? I have so much more to offer the world than just my looks. Attractiveness, according to the world's definition, looks a little more like Gisele Bundchen and a little less like a 27 year old version of Paula Deen. Guess which one I favor? I am smart, witty, kind, loving, etc., etc., etc. Is any of that taken into account when determining beauty in our world? Not really.

So yes, I've been jaded and dismayed. I'm SO happy have moved passed that phase of my life. That's not to say that I don't struggle with self-doubt and the occasional body image issue, but I certainly don't obsessively live by them like I did previously. Plus, "the King is enthrall by [my] beauty; honor Him, for He is your Lord" (Psalm 45:11). Guess who thinks I'm pretty? ;-)

Just something to think about - I remember reading years ago about a breast cancer survivor that never saw herself as beautiful until she had a mastectomy and endured her fight for life. I think it's telling and beautiful that only after the vanity was ripped away that she realized all that she was and had to offer the world.

Who needs the world's dictionary to define beauty? I am my own Merriam-Webster! :-P Look at me go!!!

Project 31: Day 5

Day 5's challenge is to write a post thanking someone that has made your heart come alive. I think this is going to be incredibly difficult for me for much the same reason that I've yet to be able to document Emory's birth story. Raw emotions are tough for me to deal with, and much, much more challenging for me to put into words (be they written or spoken).

I don't want this whole project to be about motherhood, but I honestly don't know that my heart ever fully loved until the day Emory was born. (Seriously, I'm already tearing up. See, very hard for this lady.) Don't get me wrong, I adore me some Phillip. I have a wonderful family that blesses me daily with support. However, there's something different and completely indescribable about the love you have for your own child. So, cheers to Emory:

My sweet boy,

Do you know what your smile does for my heart? I always knew I wanted to be a mommy, but I never would have imagined that God would reward me with someone as amazing as you. Every time you look at me with those big brown eyes, or flash that gummy grin, or grab my finger as tight as you can my heart melts all over.

We were so excited when we finally found out that you were on the way. Our doctor looked at you about two months ago and said, "It was a hard fought conception, a very difficult pregnancy, and a rough few months to begin with, but he looks like he was worth every second." You know what? You were. I would do it all over again...times ten.

I was so proud of you from the very beginning. I think you have a little bit of my stubbornness because you sure did fight. We got to see you a whole lot while you were in my tummy because the doctors decided you were high risk. I remember going in for what should have been a normal appointment and being rushed down stairs to be induced. Did you know that I was planning on going grocery shopping that day? They told me you would be in the NICU because you were refusing to move, stopped practicing breathing, and weren't responsive. Guess what? You showed them! You weighed almost a pound more than they estimated AND you never left our room. (They tried to take you one night to the nursery, but I cried so they brought you back. You were much stronger than I even then.)

You make each day so exciting! I have never been a morning person...EVER. It didn't take long before I started loving those early morning giggles and chats. You are the best person to take walks with, especially on the farm. You love to take everything in. I think you get that strong, silent thing from your Daddy. However once you have a place figured out, you make your presence known. I have to say that I love watching you learn and grow. Seeing you absorb all the world has to offer is intoxicating.

I was pretty happy with my life before you, but I always knew something was missing. I never knew that SOMETHING SO LITTLE COULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE. Someone gave us a little magnet as part of a gift at one of our showers, so I hung on the refrigerator because the words remind me of you:

"Just when you think you know love, something little comes along to remind you just how big it really is."

Little Man, some days you make me feel like my heart is going to jump right out of my chest with delight. I'm sure you and I will tread rough waters in the future, but I always want you to remember that you are the reason I get out of bed every day. I don't do it because I have to, but instead because I can't wait to see how much better our bond will be today than it was yesterday.

I love you Sweet E. You are the light in my life. Thank you for making me come alive.

Project 31: Day 4 Rescheduled

Why would I reschedule a day? Well, Day 4 calls for me to post a picture of my favorite outfits. Here is a list of why this is a dilemma:

1. I just had a baby a few months ago, my favorite outfits fit but certainly not in the way they did before so I have to rethink this "favorite" stamp before placing it on any clothing lately.
2. It's almost 9 PM and I haven't showered since last night. There, I said it. Don't judge. I can promise you will too once you're a mom of a little one OR if you are already at this same place in life I am willing to bet that it may be even longer since your last shower. :-)
3. I have an interview later this week, so I will look decent that day...maybe not my favorite outfit, but I will look presentable. (Oh, and no I'm not going back to work but I am excited about the prospect of spending a few hours a week working OUTSIDE of the house while Emory is with Phillip. I started a tutoring position this morning and the interview is for an additional one! Yay!!! I get my educational fix, I get to help sweet kids, AND it gives me a reason to get dressed in the morning! I did look decent today until the baby spit up all over me and the dogs tracked dirt in the house (ruined my pants by cleaning that up). So no, you don't want to see me at the moment.) Prayers are appreciated! So far, I really like this gig.

Sweet Potato Monster!

As it turns out, the beginning of October in our house begot the cultivation of a little monster.

We started sweet potatoes this week. Our Little Man LOVES his sweet taters (further proof that the child is EXACTLY like his Daddy).

Emory is still spitting up (I hope this subsides once we pass the 6 month milestone), so we have to put him down with LOTS of padding underneath. Somehow, this still leaves us changing sheets once a day.

We put him down this weekend and he woke up from a nap fairly early and fussy (unusual). I went in to check on him, and when I rolled him over I almost hit the floor laughing. Every time I've pictured this scene in my head since that moment I die laughing all over again. For this is what I encountered as I rolled our sweet boy over:

Project 31: Day 3

Who is someone you know who inspires beauty?

This one is difficult for me to answer because I feel incredibly blessed to be surrounded by precious individuals that have made so many positive impacts on my life. I grew up with a great family. We had our issues like any other family, but at the end of the day we were there for each other. I was blessed to see lasting love and companionship in all of the relationships that meant the most in my life.

When I married Phillip I was thrown into a family much bigger and closer than my own. There are pros and cons to this as well, but boy do they love each other! I told Phillip once a few years ago that when I married him I got not one, not two, not three, but essentially FOUR mother-in-laws. His mama is the best, and you better bet she loves her son. She would do anything for us. Now that I've had Emory, I have to say that the mother/son bond is beyond anything I could ever describe. Then there was Grandma Taylor. I know families aren't suppose to play favorites, but ask anyone in Phillip's family who Grandma loved the best and they will say Phillip. I'm not sure why, but he was the go-to guy. She adored that boy. It literally broke his heart the day she passed away. Phillip was also raised in part by Ms. Miriam, his best friend's mom. Heavens bless her heart! I just know from dealing with Phillip and Christopher as adults that I would have lost my mind looking after them as teenagers. She and Mr. McNair welcomed Phillip into their family as one of their own, and I have all suspicions that this completely changed his life.

Lastly, there's Aunt Diane. She is someone that I think of when I hear the word beauty. There are so many reasons why I ADORE this woman. She's the first person in Phillip's family that I developed a close relationship with. She's been our gracious hostess for 6+ years now when we visit Florence (and when we come so does ALL of our baggage...baby, dogs, most of our house, and occasionally college friends of mine). She has such a warm, welcoming spirit with everyone she encounters.

You see, Aunt Diane has Lupus. There have been MANY days when we've been down there when she will kill herself cooking for their entire extended family all the while feeling miserable. If there is anyone I can think of that epitomizes the servant's heart persona it's her. She never complains, she loves her family, her door is always opened, AND (get this) despite the troubles that come her way she remains an optimist.

I want to be like this! I am nearly always concerned when how I look or how my house will be perceived. She isn't. She keeps a clean house, but she doesn't fret over the small stuff. She puts herself together, but doesn't obsess over clothing or appearances. She certainly didn't have a great year in 2010, but she never let it alter her mood because tomorrow would come and bring a brighter times. Let's just say she's a far cry from this self-admitted whiner and pessimist extraordinaire!

There is no way I could adequately sing her praises, but to say that she's an inspiration is a start. I pray I am open enough to allow the Lord to cultivate a servant's heart in me half as rich as Aunt Diane's. She inspires beauty.

Project 31: Day 2

Is it bad that I'm beyond exhausted and I just had a whole weekend of being in town? I'm about to fall asleep as I'm posting, but I am determined to make this Project 31 thing last. So kind readers, if you will pardon any grammatical errors I will attempt to answer Day 2's question.

What makes you uniquely you?

This one is a doozie! I am not sure where to start, but I know the first word that comes to mind is "honest." Now, this is both a negative and a positive thing. You see honesty is good, but I've learned (the hard way) that delivery and timing are key. So while someone may appreciate a candid individual, I'm sure they appreciate them much more when they have focused on the words they are relaying their message with as much as the message itself. I've gotten better, but there is still a ways to go on this one.

Here are some of the pros:

Christian - I am not ashamed of the fact that I was born and raised in the Bible Belt, but in no way did this automatically baptize me into the Christian world. I accepted Christ as my Savior when I was younger and grew up trying to learn more about Him. I will say that my collegiate years did a lot for me in the way of shaping how I individually dealt with and approached the subject of faith. The convictions I have regarding my faith resulted from hours and hours of devotional time and incessant praying. I'm not perfect, nor will I ever be, but I now feel grounded in my beliefs.
Wife/Mother - I think this goes without saying, but I thought one boy had changed me more than I ever could/would. Then this little 6 pound 12 ounce bundle of love came along and threw my world for a loop. Let's just say that without these two I wouldn't be a portion of the woman I am today.
Family - Phillip and I both come from close families. We were blessed to be raised with not only our nuclear family, but our grandparents were never far. During the summers we would get to go to work with my parents. We would deliver plants to all the florist in North and South Carolina. My granddaddy worked with my dad for a while. So every day we'd either get to ride with one of them. We had to unload trucks full of plants from Florida. We had to keep the house clean. We did a lot of stuff when we were little, but from what I can remember we had fun learning how to work. My dad and I were talking recently and he said that if there was one thing my sisters and I should be able to say of him and they way we were raised around their business, it is that we walked away with true work ethic...and we did. We knew that greenhouses were hot and humid, but if we wanted money before we could drive and go get a job we had to work there. We plan on raising Emory the same way. I would love to give him everything he has ever wanted, but that's not healthy nor is it realistic. We want him to work for it. Something tells me that he'll thank us for it later.
Hospitable/Caring - I've always been fairly good about doing what I can to help other people. My goal lately is to not focus so much on the size of my house or how nicely it's decorated. Instead, I want to be a good steward of what the Lord has given us. I want to open my home to friends and family ANYTIME. Previously, I would have apologized had my house not been spotless. Not now. Here's my story: I'm a mom of a 5 month old, I have 2 dogs, a lack of sleep, and a 30 year old husband who, despite his best efforts, keeps getting lost on the way to the hamper. Will you see a fur ball? Maybe. Will I look gorgeous? Probably not. Will Phillip's uniforms ever all be corralled properly? Not likely. I realized I had hang ups with all of these things. Why? I learned a lot from Phillip's grandma when she was alive. One of those things is that the time you can spend with friends and family is time you can't get back. Those fur balls will be there later, my guests (if they truly love me) won't mind if I don't have my hair fixed and I'm running around in yoga pants, and Phillip's uniforms can all be wrangled in once I've seen that my guests are cared for and had a nice visit. In fact, I'm starting a Bible study for ladies this Thursday. This is a big step for me because I am 99.9% sure that there is no way my house will look presentable. I don't care. It's about the fellowship and growth in Christ, not my presentation.

Now for the not so pretty side of things:

OCD - I wish I were kidding, but I'm not. I think Emory is going to break me of this. My house is already driving me nuts and he's not even mobile. I'm too tired to relentlessly check outlets and light switches. I am so thankful for help folding towels that I don't even care if they are not stacked properly in the closet.
Stressed/Worried - I think this goes without saying for any woman, but almost anything that could trouble a person troubles me. I wish it weren't the case, but it is. Heavens help me when Emory is a teenager. I'm gonna bubble wrap the child. I've learned recently that when those worried and stressors come up to take that as a sign from the Lord and pray for peace. Sometimes I have to pray about a specific thing several times a day, but the momentary peace is completely worth it.
Cynical - I think this has yielded the sarcasm in me, but it's true. I am such a pessimist. I always expect the worst from a person. I trust NO ONE. Perhaps that's why I'm fairly self-sufficient, but it doesn't lend itself to healthy relationships.

I'm sure there is more, but I am about to pass out as I am typing. What makes you unique?

Project 31: Day 1

A few weeks ago I posted about a blog that I love to follow and the challenge she made to fellow bloggers to complete Project 31. Today completely got away from me (big surprise), but I'm hoping this project will cause me to stretch and grow beyond my normal comfort level.

The challenge for Day 1 is to describe what beauty means to you. Now, had someone asked me this question 10 years ago I probably would have picked up the latest issue of some magazine and pointed to a stick figured Hollywood icon with her perfect hair and boney cheekbones. She'd be a far cry from my 5'5" plump, Southern-fed, double-chinned self. I have to say that three big things changed the way I describe beauty now: going to college at Meredith, the man I married, and the birth of our son.

Meredith College did a lot for me. I went in as a timid, quiet freshman with my fair share of body image issues. I came out four years later as an articulate, well-educated, confident young woman. I didn't care if I had a boyfriend or if I looked perfect that day. However, I was (and still remain) a firm believer that pearls go great with your fanciest dress or your dingiest yoga pants. (Motherhood has yielded more days of dingy rather than fancy.) Don't get me wrong, I didn't walk out perfect but I learned that I had a voice and it was worth something. My opinions, though they may not be shared by all, should be valued. I was encircled by a phenomenal group of women. We laughed together, shared one another's burdens, and developed into young ladies as a unit. This is beauty.

This may not seem beautiful to you, but to anyone that spent four pivotal years at Meredith College this is the epitome of beauty.

Graduation day!

Next, there's that man of mine. Oh brother! He has totally changed the way I view beauty. I had a relentless struggle with body image, even after my MC days. We started dating and the boy would never compliment me. I was wondering what was wrong with him. I did it all right. I had the Ann Taylor dresses, my cutest purse, my hair and make up was perfect and nothing! Then I threw on a pair of jeans, left my hair curly, and frumped it up by going au naturale, and THEN he wouldn't shut up about how gorgeous I looked. Seriously?! This has ended up being one of the most endearing things about our relationship (and came in quite handy when I was too sick during pregnancy to put effort into the way I looked). You see I always dated guys that knew I was smart, but I never dated one that truly loved me for what I was on the inside. He knows I'm opinionated, brutally honest, and stubborn as a mule, but he loves me for it. Phillip doesn't mind if I don't put effort into the way I look one day. All he cares about is that I feel loved and our son is cared for and loved on. I think marriage vows should have a clause somewhere in between "for better or for poorer" and "in sickness and in health" that says, "on frumpy days and on glam days." That is beauty.

This is probably curly at it's craziest. He loves me still.

Most recently beauty was redefined by our sweet Emory. There truly is no way to describe the love a parent automatically has for their child. It is a simple, deep, pure love. I don't know that there is a thing Emory could ever do to break that bond. I am sure I will have days of disappointment and exhaustion in being his mother, but he has developed in me a love that is everlasting. He has shown me the beauty of God. If God's love for me is half of what mine is towards Emory then I'm blessed beyond measure. I have always been a fairly guarded person. I found it easiest to not allow people the opportunity to hurt you, so I built walls. I told Phillip recently that I am overjoyed with my job as Emory's mother, but I'm scared to death that one day my heart will be crushed. The "what ifs" that run through your mind as a parent are constant. Elizabeth Stone said it best, "Making the decision to have a child - it's momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body." Emory truly is just that, my heart. I think this exposed vulnerability and eternal adoration for another human being is beautiful. The journey to true beauty began long before Emory, but he literally was the nail in my superficial coffin. I can't believe I am going to post the picture below, but I think it's telling. I am not a fan of the way I look anymore, but when I see the stretch marks I am reminded of two years fighting to conceive and one very long, difficult pregnancy and when I look at my surgical scars I remember that I made it through 6+ months of hell to bring my child into this world safely and as healthy as possible. That is beauty.

Granted, this was taken in May and a little over a month after Emory's birth. Some of the stretch marks have faded, but some are still there. The scars from the surgery are quite prominent. It's ok because I have a beautiful baby boy. They are the story of our journey to him.

He was worth every tear drop, every prayer, and every ounce of pain...and SO much more.

Perhaps this Project 31 gig may reveal too much, but I've always been a fairly candid person. My goal is to grow along the journey this next month, and the only way for me to do that is to be completely honest. I hope you recognize all the beauty in your life. (Hint: You always find it in the small things.)

Taking a Stand

Poor Emory was so exhausted today, but not feeling the nap thing. So after a complete meltdown I pulled out my trusty "always go outside" card. I thought a quick walk would work. Normally, we take Mason on a walk with us. However, I didn't feel like playing tug of war with him for 5 minutes just to enjoy the last 25 minutes of the walk, so I left him at home. He decided to let me know what he thought about my kind gesture.

Mason is never ever bad, but why'd it have to be the toilet paper?

The one good thing I can say about this is that I didn't have to clean up the paper. What you see is all that's left. That's right. Mason ATE the rest of the roll.


BAD DOGGIE!

Oh well! Emory fell asleep IN HIS STROLLER during the walk. This is a complete miracle. This child refuses to sleep anywhere but his crib. Granted as soon as I stopped he woke up, but still! A little progress is progress nonetheless, so I'll take it!

Project 52 for Marriage: Week 1

Everyone knows that babies change everything. Our marriage has changed in SO many ways over the past 5+ months. Some good aspects and some...let's call them "weaknesses" have emerged, but we're learning to be parents and spouses. It's an adjustment for everyone.

I am still not okay with leaving Emory. I know, he's almost 6 months old (trust me, I'm trying to get better about this). Phillip is probably beyond frustrated but is gracious enough to not say anything to me. However, I am realizing that our marriage will never flourish if we only focus on the baby all the time.

That being said, I was reading the Prayer of Hannah blog the other week and saw a post about Project 52. (I know, I'm starting lots of "Projects" this month.) However, this one is focused on marriages. The rules they had set forth may not function for us, but the idea is to have at least one date a week for an entire year. We can do this, right? RIGHT! It had been so long since we have actually dated. Between the stress of fertility drugs, not feeling well on the drugs or during the pregnancy, having Emory, having surgery, adjusting to life with a baby, etc. we have honestly totally neglected the relational aspect of our marriage.

Phillip and I made our own "guidelines" to follow:

1) Phillip has to plan one date a month.

2) No two dates can be repeated in the same month.

3) No cell phones, internet, etc. during said date.

4) There must be at least 2 hours spent together.

5) Emory can come on dates as long as the focus of the date is still our relationship.

Now we're having to be creative because we are still working on the one salary so there is definitely no dining at the nicest places in town, but we're not really the type of people that need that kind of outing to enjoy ourselves. Our relationship has always functioned well as a simple one. I'd like to see it remain that way.

Last week on LivingSocial there was a deal for dance lessons. You read that right: DANCE LESSONS. Phillip and I are admittedly two of the least coordinated people in the world. I fall off of my front porch at least once a year (and this year I am still recovering from the bone bruise this fall inflicted on my shin). WE DO NOT DANCE.

Anyway, I thought that $25 dollars for 5 private dance lessons was a steal! I enjoyed dancing in college and high school, so I figured that I'd suck Phillip into this one and both of us could be out of our element together. Ya'll! I wish I had a video from this session. All I can say is that our instructor is so precious and kind. Lord, bless her heart for having to deal with us. We all laughed...A LOT. At the end of the day, that's all we really wanted. Plus we learned the basics for a lot of ballroom dances, some shag moves, and how very short I am compared to my husband.

The best news is...

I left Emory!

Granted, it was only for two hours and he was at our house with my mom. Rome wasn't built in a day! This is progress. I didn't even cry! He seemed to have fun too. We got home and he was playing with his Nana on the front porch.


We survived! Emory wasn't nearly as amused as we were.

We are due to go back next week as long as our schedules work out. So our first few dates will repeat, but that's ok they still count for spending time together.

First "REAL" Food

GREEN BEANS! Emory has officially mastered eating rice cereal, so as a reward we decided it's time to usher in the real food. Oh man! This was some kind of funny! I have a video that I'll post later, but for now here's a sneak peak!

Meeting Olivia

This past weekend, Phillip and I loaded Emory into the car and headed to Raleigh. Yes, Emory met the Triangle area! I hope to take him to my alma mater, Meredith College, the next time we are up. I know he's a boy, but it's important to me that he sees the place that shaped so much of who his mama is today.

My friend, Jenni, had her baby July 21st. I've been so excited to meet this little one. She makes me miss Emory being so little. She is also SUCH a good sleeper. Lord knows, I love me some Little Man, but for some reason I have a child that detests his car seat. He refuses to sleep anywhere other than his crib or pack 'n play. Saturday, I left Emory with Phillip while Jenni and I went out with Olivia. Guess who slept the entire time? Yup, Miss Fabulous! She's a social butterfly too. Smiles all the time. Love it!

Clemson played on Saturday, so Phillip wanted to watch the game. Emory was more than happy to have Daddy time! Jenni even dressed Olivia in her finest orange for the day, although she herself is a diehard Wolfpack fan. Talk about a gracious hostess! ;-)

I tell Phillip to smile and this is what I get. Olivia was trying to show him how it's done.

Yes, my child is wearing overalls...without a shirt. Just count yourself lucky that he's not naked (as it is his preferred wardrobe staple as of late).

I'm not sure what is going on here with Emory, but I laughed like crazy when I saw this picture. He either REALLY wants my wine or he REALLY wants me to not have it.

We had so much fun hanging out with precious little Olivia! We can't wait to see her again! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
